What to do if the stalks rot away at the Zamioculcas?
In East Africa and especially in Kenya, the lucky spring, botanically Zamioculcas zamiifolia, is a widespread crop. In this country, Zamioculcas, considered to be very easy to care for, is a popular indoor plant, as it needs very little water and rarely needs to be fertilized or repotted. Nonetheless, problems can arise, especially as a result of improper care: If you water the plant too often, for example, the stalks often rot.
Stem Rot - Frequent watering is the cause
The Zamioculcas has adapted perfectly to the hot and dry climate of eastern Africa and can live without water for weeks. The plant stores the precious wetness in its fleshy, on the lower thickened petioles and in the leaves arranged like flowers. For this reason, the Zamioculcas should not be poured too often - rather keep with the watering back. Too much moisture causes the roots to rot due to waterlogging and eventually this decay goes into the stems - but when they turn brown and mushy, the disease is usually already very advanced. Therefore, look for the first signs: For example, the leaves in many cases, first yellow.
Save Zamioculcas with rotting stems
With a little luck you can still save your decaying Zamioculcas. To do this, you must immediately pot the plant, remove any adhering substrate, and all rotting and yellowed parts of the plant. If necessary, if the majority of the crop is already infected, simply divide the remaining healthy remainder and replenish it. In any case, the lucky feather must be circumcised more or less extensively. Then the plant comes in a new pot - very important to not transfer any fungal spores in the new planter - and receives fresh substrate. Do not pour it the first few weeks, it has enough water stored in the remaining leaf organs.
Tips
After repotting and preventive measures, you should proceed as follows when watering the Zamioculcas: Do not water the plant until you can insert your index finger at least two centimeters into the substrate and it is still dry there. Only a superficial dryness is not enough - in the depth of the pot still enough moisture may be present. Play it safe with a hydroponic culture that keeps track of the water supply.
