Most magnolias have very large, glossy leaves that are alternate. Whether your magnolia tree feels comfortable all around, you can quite easily see the leaf color.
Not all magnolias are deciduous
Many species of magnolia throw off their leaves in the fall, although there are also evergreen varieties. The difference is due to the different origin of the woody plants, because some magnolias come from always warm areas. It is a rule of thumb that evergreen magnolia varieties are usually little to hardy and therefore should be cultivated either in the pot or, planted out, in mild regions (eg the German wine-growing regions). The deciduous magnolia flower first and then develop their leaf. Only for a possible second flowering in summer can leaves and flowers appear simultaneously.
Leaves turn brown
Brown leaves on magnolias usually indicate either damage from late frosts and / or a non-steady location - the magnolia simply does not feel well and indicates this with the leaf color. Magnolias need a sunny (but not too sunny) and sheltered location, in addition, the soil should be as loose, humus rich and slightly acidic. Brown spots, on the other hand, are a hallmark of leaf spot disease caused by a fungus. It occurs especially in warm, but humid weather conditions.

Yellow-colored leaves always indicate a lack of nutrients. This can come about because the roots either due to a too heavy soil or waterlogging (caution, rottenness!) Can not absorb nutrients and transport to the upper leaf areas or simply because there are not enough nutrients in the soil. For optimal nutrient uptake, magnolia needs a slightly acidic to acidic soil with pH values between 5.5 and 6.8. In many cases, the yellow leaves of magnolia indicate a lack of magnesium or iron. Fertilization with a Rhodendrondünger is not wrong in such a case.
Tips
Magnolias need a lot of water and should therefore be watered during periods of drought and heat. However, you should be careful not to give the irrigation water over leaves and flowers.
