Often the Camellia japonica is sold as hardy. Do not be fooled by it. Camellias tolerate and even need cool temperatures. But really hardy the pretty ornamental plants are not.
In the winter, you can also calmly lay camellias in the bucket on the terrace without frost protection until the temperatures drop to a maximum of -5 degrees Celsius. But then it is high time to bring them into the house.

On the windowsill in the living room, the Camellia japonica has nothing to look for in winter. It's just too warm there.
It survives the winter in a barely heated, bright room, such as a cool conservatory.
Camellias need light
A major problem with hibernating the Camellia japonica is the lack of light. The plant needs sufficient brightness even in winter.
If you can not offer it a suitable place, set up the plant in the basement or in the corridor window and provide by special plant lamps for sufficient brightness. 16 hours of light are optimal for camellias.
Without cold no flowers
That camellias are reputed to be hardy may be due to the fact that they need cold, but just no frost.
The flowers only open when the ambient temperature of 6 to 10 degrees is cool enough. They will delight the gardener for up to five weeks.
As soon as the temperatures rise, the flowering time of the camellia is over quickly.
