Worldwide there are about 430 different species of cranesbill. Even in the Arctic and the Antarctic, representatives of this species have been found, while others thrive in the humid mountainous regions of tropical to subtropical regions - thus hardly any other plant has such a wide range of distribution. Due to the delicate, but in very strong colors appearing flowers, the cranesbill is often planted in ornamental gardens.

Sunny to partially shaded location preferred
The different preferences of various cranesbills with regard to their location can be explained by their no less diverse origin. Although most cranesbills prefer a sunny to partially shaded spot, there are also some shady species. There are also differences with regard to the soil condition: While some cranesbills need moist to moderately moist substrates, others should be planted in rather dry soil. However, the species-spanning predilection for permeable, loamy-humic soils is relatively similar.
Cultivate cranesbill in the garden
Most cranesbills are very easy to care for and can be easily planted in numerous gardens, provided their individual site requirements can be met. Because of their simplicity, they are also wonderful for a bucket culture on the balcony and terrace. Depending on the species and variety, cranesbills are suitable for planting in colorful borders or as groundcover, for example in rockeries or under woody plants.
Tips
Contrary to the opinion of some gardeners, the cranesbill is by no means poisonous. On the contrary, because some species are even - like the domestic Ruprechtskraut - edible.
