When should I cut my weigela?
The pruning of perennials and shrubs is one of the most important and often time-consuming gardening tasks. The planning also decides on the success, also with the Weigelie. If the time is chosen unfavorably, then it may not bloom.
When and how best to prune your weigela depends on the condition of the plant and what you want to achieve with the pruning. But it is always important that the Weigelie blooms on the old wood, that is to shoots from the previous year.
Weigelias are already training the new buds for spring next autumn. If these are cut off, then the Weigelie does not bloom. Therefore, a pruning in the fall is generally discouraged. If you have Weigelias planted as a hedge, then a compromise is necessary, because hedges are often pruned in the fall. Make sure you have enough buds for a beautiful flower next year.
The rejuvenation cut
Since the easy-care Weigelie tends to age, a regular pruning is advisable. You do not have to do this rejuvenation cut every year, but about every three years. Then cut off the oldest branches immediately after flowering just above the ground or a new shoot. But leave only strong young shoots that have formed close to the ground.
The radical section
If too much time has passed since the last rejuvenation cut and the flowering of your weigela is already subsiding, then think about a radical cut. You can do this well in the spring. Shorten all shoots to a length of about 20 centimeters. Of course, the Weigelie does not bloom in the year of cut.
