The cultivation of pomelo
Under the term "pomelo" different varieties of grapefruit are summarized. Citrus maxima - the genuine grapefruit - is native to South China and Southeast Asia and is still grown in this region. In addition, a pomelo is available from us, which emerged in the 1970s from a cross between grapefruit and grapefruit. Both varieties are grown worldwide today in the so-called subtropical "citrus belt" between the 20th and 40th latitude.

In its subtropical homeland, the pomelo tree can become very tall: the plant reaches up to 15 meters and develops a broad, spreading crown. Branches of unrefined trees have many leafless thorns up to five centimeters long. But even with us, you can usually pull from the seed of a pomelo purchased his own pomelo tree. The pomelo - whether grapefruit or hybrid product - is very vigorous and also easier to care for than other citrus species. The tree is less sensitive to cold (not frost!) And can therefore stay outdoors for a longer time. In addition to the propagation of seeds and a vegetative propagation of cuttings is possible. To shorten the long youth phase of the tree, you should ennoble on Poncirus trifoliata, the bitter lemon or trifoliate orange.
Maintain a pomelo
The care of pomelo is very similar to the care of other citrus species, since the claims of plants are almost the same. The pomelo
Pomelo overwinter
Like all other citrus plants, the pomelo does not tolerate frost, although it is otherwise less sensitive to cooler temperatures. In winter you should place the plant in a not too warm but bright location and occasionally (but not too often!) Water. In winter quarters, temperatures between five and ten degrees Celsius are optimal. Basically with all citrus plants and thus also with pomelo: the warmer the plant is, the brighter its environment must be. Due to its sensitivity to frost, the pomelo should not be planted in the garden
Tips & Tricks
For a posture in our latitudes the most suitable is probably the pomelo quite similar New Zealand grapefruit. The "New Zealand Grape" has grapefruit-like, flat-wide fruits that are very mild. This tree needs much less heat than a normal grapefruit or pomelo and also matures earlier.
