Unlike many deciduous trees, most conifers should not be cut back, or only slightly. Since they are also very vigorous, dwarf or other breeding forms should be planted in the garden from the outset. Wild forms are often too big and can not be kept small by cutting measures.

Deciduous trees and conifers do not only differ externally, but also with regard to a specific point: coniferous plants have no sleeping eyes and therefore do not drive out again if they are cut back too much. Instead, only cut back to the green wood, since growth only grow on the shoot tips. A strong pruning results in the result that unsightly holes are created that do not close again. However, there is one exception: yew trees can even be radically cut back and still drive out again.

If you have not cut a hedge for a very long time, you can only arrange with its height and width - because a drastic pruning does not work. The only alternative is to tear out the hedge and plant a new one.
