Real jasmine is bad to pull as a hedge
In the Mediterranean countries you can often admire whole hedges of genuine jasmine. In our latitudes, the popular ornamental plant is only partially suitable for planting as a hedge. It is not hardy and must be wintered indoors.
Real jasmine is not suitable for hedges
There are several reasons why True Jasmine is not well suited to hedge design:
The perennial jasmine is deciduous. He loses his leaves in the fall. Even if you could overwinter it outside, the jasmine would not form an opaque hedge in winter.
Make a summer hedge of jasmine
However, there is one good alternative, as you can pull a real jasmine hedge for the terrace or balcony during the summer. Put several climbing plants in tubs and attach trellis. Offshoot you get by propagating cuttings.
Place the tubs as a border on the terrace or along the balcony railing.
If you have cut back the jasmine in the spring, it branches well and is quite dense. During the flowering season you can enjoy the intense scent as you spend the evenings on the terrace.
True jasmine must be wintered frost-free
Once the frost sets in, the glory of a real jasmine hedge is over. The buckets have to migrate to winter quarters before temperatures drop below zero.
Frost does not survive the perennial jasmine, not even with a good winter protection. An exception is Jasminum nudiflorum, which is conditionally hardy. However, it also flowers in winter and spring and is therefore not so decorative in the summer.
Jasmine in a bucket over the winter in a frost-free place, where the temperatures may not rise above ten degrees. If the container plant is too warm, it does not bloom the following year.
Tips
If you see dense hedges of jasmine in this country, it is all about false jasmine or scented jasmine. These varieties belong to the pipe shrubs and are hardy. They are also deciduous and throw off all leaves in the fall.
