Hyacinths are hardy and do not need winter protection
Hyacinths are hardy and do not need winter protection in the garden. On the contrary: frost or at least very cool temperatures are even crucial, so that the hyacinth blooms again next spring. Hyacinths in the pot also need a cold phase.
Winter hyacinths in the garden
Hyacinths are absolutely hardy. If you have enough space in the bed, just leave the tubers in the ground. However, the prerequisite is that the soil is loose and permeable to water. As soon as waterlogging occurs, the tuber rots and rots. Moisture makes wintery onions more difficult than frost.
Loosen the soil well before planting and mix sand under very firm soil. This will prevent the water from damaging the earth. The best planting time is the very early spring. Then the onions have enough time to make many roots and grow well.
If you have planted the bulbs in the autumn, you should sprinkle a mulch over the planting site. In the first year hyacinth bulbs get a good winter protection.
Preparing hyacinths in the garden for the winter
After flowering finished in May, prepare hyacinths for winter:
Before hibernation, cut all yellow and withered leaves that are still on the plant.
You do not have to do any more to supply the hardy hyacinths in the garden. Due to the low temperatures in winter, the tubers are stratified. Only then will the plants bring new leaves and flowers next year.
Remove onions in autumn
It is not necessary to dig out the hyacinth bulbs in the fall and to spend the winter in the house. However, if the space in the garden bed is very limited, you can bring it into the house over the winter and put it back in the spring.
Store the onions dark and in a cool place. Even in hyacinth glass, the onions can be overwintered well.
Tips & Tricks
