The Hydrangea: The blooming chameleon of the garden
The flower color of hydrangea is an exciting topic for hobby gardeners. By altering the pH of the soil and possibly adding hydrangea blue, the hydrangea changes its color. As a result, interesting color accents can be set in the flowerbed and the hydrangea adapts like no other perennial to the color design of the flower bed.
The floor is responsible for the color change
First of all, it is important to know that only the pink-colored hydrangea species are able to change their color. The tint of the flowers is significantly influenced by these points:
To achieve a color change to pink
For a blue hydrangea to have delicate pink flowers, the pH must be shifted to the alkaline range. As a result, the plant absorbs less aluminum and the flower color fades.
Reduce the soil around the hydrangea several times a year until it settles to a pH of about 6. Fertilize the hydrangea twice a year with a special hydrangea fertilizer, which is additionally iron added. This will help prevent the plant from developing yellow leaves due to iron deficiency.
Sauer makes blue
The most popular flower color in hydrangeas is a beautiful blue or rich purple. In order for the tint of the flowers to turn blue, the pH of the substrate must be in the acidic range. At the same time, there must be enough aluminum in the soil.
Acidification of the soil
Various means are suitable for this:
Increase aluminum content of the soil
If the substrate has a pH of 5.2 to 5.5 you can apply hydrangea blue or aluminum sulphate. Check this value at regular intervals with test sticks, which you can get from the garden shop. Hydrangea Blue should always be used in the quantity indicated on the packaging. If you prefer aluminum sulfate, you should dissolve two tablespoons of aluminum in five liters of water and pour the plant with this mixture.
Tips & Tricks
Before hydrangea blue or aluminum sulphate treatment hydrangea must be well poured. Only then can the plant absorb the coloring agent well.
