Exotic pomelo has year-round season

The pomelo, actually a fairly modern cross between grapefruit and grapefruit, is - like other citrus fruits - cultivated worldwide in the so-called "citrus belt". This term refers to the subtropical areas approximately between the 20th and 40th parallel north and south of the equator.

Main growing areas of Pomelo

The crossbred pomelo is cultivated primarily in Israel and South Africa, where it comes from all year round in our supermarkets. In winter Pomelo comes mainly from Israel, in summer from South Africa. Peak season in German supermarkets, however, the pomelo in the period between November and April. However, pomelo is not the same pomelo, because there are a number of different varieties that are also increasingly delivered to Germany at different times. It is true that the varieties with lighter pulp taste tart than those with red or pink.

What is a honey pomelo?

The honey pomelo is a special breed and is grown exclusively in southern China. The fruit, also known as honey pomelo, is not a pomelo as described here, but a variant of pomelo. Finally, this is often referred to in English as "pomelo" and thus does not mean the same fruit as in German. The honey pomelo is available only between October and April and has a honey-sweet taste with a slightly tart touch.

What is a Thai pomelo?

The pomelo is one of the traditional Thai fruit varieties and can be found everywhere (as well as in Malaysia and Indonesia). However, this is not the crossbred pomelo, but the good old grapefruit. The misleading name comes from the English. Incidentally, the southern Chinese honey pomelo is a variant of the Thai pomelo (or rather: grapefruit). Because in contrast to the pomelo originating from Israel, the grapefruit is native to Southeast Asia. Like the pomelo, the grapefruit has a season all year round, but is difficult to obtain in German supermarkets.

Tips & Tricks

In each case at the beginning and at the end of the season, especially the honey pomelos are more expensive, the fruits are cheaper to have around Christmas.
