Grapefruit has season all year round
The grapefruit, a random cross between orange and grapefruit, was discovered around 1750 on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Even today, the Caribbean Islands and the southern United States (especially Florida) are among the main growing areas of bittersweet fruit. On the other hand, grapefruit exported to Europe are mostly from Israel or South Africa.
Winter vitamin bomb
The grapefruit contains a lot of vitamin C as well as a whole range of valuable B-series vitamins. These ingredients make the fruit so valuable - especially as a prevention of colds in winter already low in vitamin. As well as that the grapefruit has high season especially between the months of October and March. However, the fruit is available all year round, being imported in the warm season, especially from South Africa. By the way: Grapefruit is not the same as grapefruit, because there are a whole range of grapefruit varieties. Fruits with a lighter shell and light flesh taste tarter than red-fleshed specimens.
Tips & Tricks
Purchased grapefruit can be stored for two to three weeks, preferably cool. If the fruits are not consumed fresh, they ripen again during storage and develop a sweeter, milder taste.
