Flies in the compost are not dangerous but they are annoying, especially when the compost is near the house. The problem occurs especially in thermal composters and compost in the bucket. How do you combat flies in compost and how do you prevent infestation?
Combat flies in compost
If you discover many flies in your composter, you will not have much choice but to rebuild the compost.
To do this, take off the hood of the composter and place it next to the previous place. Then re-coat the compost material by alternately filling in moist and dry materials.
If there are no dry materials, you can put monochrome printed newspaper, cardboard, torn egg cartons or some concrete between the layers.
Compost is too moist or incorrectly equipped
A few flies can be found on every compost, whether in the compost pile in the field or in the composter next to the terrace. If the infestation is very severe, this is a sign that the compost is too wet and / or things were disposed of that do not belong to the compost.
The compost must always be a bit moist in order to offer the beneficial insects a good location. Too much wetness, however, leads to decay and attracts thereby flies.
The disposal of cooked food scraps and especially meat products is a cause of a strong infestation with flies and their maggots.
How to prevent flies in compost
When filling the composter, be sure to mix as many different compost materials as possible. Here, dry and moist substances should be filled alternately. You can give the following materials between the usually very humid kitchen waste or even grass clippings:
A moist compost not only attracts flies, it also starts to stink. In order to prevent unpleasant odors, there are in the market ecological control agents that decompose odors and prevent the oviposition of flies.
Tips
In contrast to flies, woodlice are compelling in compost. They decompose coarse compost components and thus contribute significantly to the formation of good humus.
