Prefer tuberous begonia and thus extend the flowering time
Every hobby gardener is happy about a longer flowering period of his tuber begonias. They are preferred in February and then bloom in April. With the following tips you can enjoy the magnificent flowers earlier and longer on the balcony and in the garden or house.
Get tuber begonias out of hibernation
If you want to activate the growth of the tubers early, use them from February in pots or seed trays. As a plant substrate, normal potting mixed with sand has been proven. In addition, some horn shavings subsets that provides the plants with fertilizer for up to ten weeks.
Plant the tuber with the dent up to a maximum of three centimeters deep. Later on, the shoots form on this upper side. Cover air-permeable foil or hood. A bright windowsill without direct midday sun corresponds to the optimal location.
If you put them too warm, they drive many leaves but hardly form roots. Therefore, wait until the first shoots show up and then raise the temperature from 15 degrees to about 20 degrees.

With good care, the first leaves sprout after a few weeks. Now plant the plants, depending on the variety, in containers, pots, traffic lights or flower boxes. As soon as the leaves grow vigorously, they need a little more water and a shower from the spray bottle.
At the end of April, harden the tuber begonias outside in a shady spot during the day. From mid-May, if there is no risk of frost, leave the tuber begonias outside overnight or plant them in beds.
How can female flowers be distinguished from males?
Tuberous begonias are found with filled female as well as unfilled male flowers. Although they get by with little light, they bloom in a wide color spectrum from white to orange, yellow, pink to scarlet. To activate the formation of new flowers, remove the flowers regularly.
