Iron sulfate against moss in the lawn
If the lawn has become a pure Moosteppich, iron sulfate is usually recommended for control. The iron sulphate is added to the lawn as an additive to the fertilizer and destroys the moss there. However, the use of iron sulfate against moss is not completely safe.
Use iron sulfate against moss
Ferrous sulfate is widely regarded as "the remedy" for moss in the lawn. In fact, iron sulphate causes the moss to die and prevents the formation of new mosses.
Nevertheless, the garden owner should be aware that ferric sulphate is not corrosive if not directly poisonous. Other plants next to the lawn can be damaged. Also for the soil, the application of iron sulfate to moss is not necessarily the best solution.
Only suitable for lawns
With iron sulfate you can only eliminate moss in the lawn. For other applications such as moss on walls, washed concrete slabs, roofs or garden furniture, the agent is not suitable.
These materials would be etched by the iron sulfate and thus become spotty and attractive.
How to apply iron sulfate to moss
In very heavily infested lawns, you should first pull a large part of the moss with the rake from the ground.
A second application in August or September is possible with very strong moss infestation.
Alternatives to fighting moss in the lawn
Whenever possible, you should avoid the use of chemicals in the garden. It is better to scour the lawn in the spring than to combat moss with iron sulfate. This is more work, but the garden health is very beneficial.
Prevention is better than fighting
Moss is created on lawns that are very shady and damp or not sufficiently maintained. The best prevention against moss is therefore a very good lawn care.
This includes regular fertilization. The soil should be well-loosened, so that no waterlogging can arise. In the summer, if possible, only blow up until noon, then the lawn can dry better until the evening.
Mow the lawn regularly. In shady areas, the grass length should be kept slightly longer than on sunny sections.
Precautions when using iron sulfate
Ferrous sulfate is corrosive. This means that you must take care that neither liquid nor salts reach the naked skin or even the eyes directly. It is advisable to wear protective goggles as well as to wear gloves that are resistant to chemicals.
Tips
Lime nitrogen is a good prevention against moss in the lawn. The fertilizer provides dense green lawns in which moss finds no place.
