Dahlias are not hardy and do not survive frost
Hardy dahlias do not exist
Hardy dahlias for the garden do not exist. Only in Mexico, the home of the Georgines, is a variety of hardy dahlias known, a Naturdahlie, which copes well with minus temperatures. The breeds in local gardens do not survive a cold winter outdoors.
Plant dahlias in spring
The young shoots of the Dahlia tolerate no frost at all. That's why you are not allowed to plant preferred dahlias outside after the ice saints.
You can plant the tubers in the soil as early as the end of April, provided the soil has warmed to at least ten degrees.
Do not hibernate winter hardy dahlias
Since dahlias are not winter proof, you must protect the tubers from sub-zero temperatures. There are various possiblities for that:
You will have the fewest losses if you remove the tubers from the bed or the pot in the autumn, let them dry and then store them in a wooden box in the cellar. Alternatively, it does a plastic bag with some soil and many small holes. From time to time the dahlia onions have to be slightly moistened.
In particular, you should winter in the cellar especially beautiful Dahliasorten, on which you hang very much. All other methods are not that reliable. Many dahlia tubers do not survive these forms of hibernation.
Do not hibernate dahlias without a cellar?
If you do not have a cellar, you can try to overwinter the dahlia tubers in the utility room or in a frost-free garage.
It is important that the room is not too humid, not too warm and not too bright.
Overwinter dahlias in the pot
If you want to overwinter your dahlias in the pot, cut all the stems down after the first frost at the latest so that only a few centimeters remain over the earth.
Place the pots in a cool but frost-free place where it is as dark as possible. As soon as the temperature rises above ten degrees, the tubers begin to drive out.
Hibernate dahlias outside
Some gardeners report that they do not overwinter winter hardy dahlias outside. The danger that the tubers will not survive, but is great.
If you want to start a trial, winterize the dahlias as follows:
The best way to hibernate outdoors, when your dahlias grow close to the house or in a very temperate climate. In mild winters most of the Georgians survive - if they are not lazy by too much moisture or eaten by voles.
Tips & Tricks
