Why is irrigation of a hedge so important?
Whether you actually need to water your hedge or not depends on a variety of factors. In addition to the hedge plants used, soil quality, sunshine and weather play a major role. Some plant species do not require additional watering, only in hot periods of drought could watering become important. Others, on the other hand, thrive better if you supply them with water on a regular basis. In terms of soil quality, the rule is that hedge plants in sandy soils are more likely to be watered than those that are in loamy soils. Furthermore, the age of the plants has an influence on the necessity and frequency of casting: the younger the hedge, the more important is an external supply of moisture. This favors the growth of the plants.
A simple irrigation system for the hedge
A simple form of hedge irrigation is via a combination of irrigation hoses, which are laid along the hedge on the ground and connected to a water source. You can use both a garden faucet and a large rain barrel. For the latter, however, usually a submersible pump is required to move the water from the reservoir to the hedge. In addition, it is necessary to refill the barrel regularly, which can be done for example via rain or via an additional connection to the faucet. This irrigation system can also be installed with little manual skill and is also suitable for other irrigated areas in the garden.
Tips
A more professional irrigation system usually runs underground rather than above ground, protecting it from weather and other negative impacts. An additionally installed irrigation timer controls the duration of irrigation, a soil moisture sensor registers whether automatic irrigation is necessary at all. This makes it easy to avoid overhydration.
