Only perennial plants need a regular cut. This includes some varieties of the popular garden poppy. Some of them are even suitable as a cut flower for the vase. However, the classic poppy, also called wild poppy, is not one of them.
Cut poppy for the vase
To keep your poppies in the vase for a long time, cut them best in the early morning. Look for buds or flowers that are not yet fully opened. Poppy already fades after one day, other species last a little longer. If you hold the stalks of freshly cut flowers briefly under hot water, you will enjoy the blossom for a longer time.
Winter cut with perennial poppy
If you have decided to plant Turkish Poppy, then plan the pruning of your poppy in autumn. Cut back the above-ground parts of the plant to about 10 cm. You can use the clippings for winter protection right away. If it is not enough, cover your poppy with a thick layer of leaves or brushwood.
Not only frost can damage the poppy, but also too much moisture. During the flowering season, water your poppy only moderately, never in winter.
