Divide the peony: From digging to planting
They are among the oldest flowering plants on earth - the peonies. They are now available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors, inspiring the spirits of many gardeners. Why, how and when do you share them?
Sharing - less for rejuvenation than for reproduction
While other perennials should be regularly split, as they will otherwise age quickly and become lazy, this form of peony rejuvenation is unnecessary. Peonies usually persist for many decades at their location, if this is pas.
A division of the rootstock is especially useful if one or more of the following are present:
The ideal time: autumn
Divide your peonies when they are in their resting phase. Then they handle this procedure best. The rest period begins around August / September. By October you should have made the division. They recognize the onset of rest by the fact that the leaves of the peony turns yellow.
Sharing the plant properly
First, the yellowed foliage should be removed. Then carefully dig out the peony. You can use a grave fork or a spade for this purpose. After digging, remove thick bales of earth by hand and wash the rootstock with water (using a garden hose, for example). Then it is easier to see exactly where branches and buds are located.

Now the right planting depth is important at the new location. Peonies are planted with their buds 2 to 3 cm (maximum 4 cm) deep. Otherwise they will be lazy. Water the plant well and protect it with brushwood in the first winter!
Tips
In contrast to farmer's peonies, which also sprout from 'sleeping' buds, peonies and Chinese peonies only exude from the already visible, reddish buds. Pay attention to this with the division!
