Anemones multiply by seeds
Spring-blooming anemones usually multiply through their tubers. However, some varieties, like the autumn anemones, can be extracted from seeds. This is basically the case when the anemone is a perennial.
Collect seeds or buy in specialized stores
Rearing anemones from seeds is not easy. If you still want to try it, you can buy seeds from gardeners. Be sure to pick the hardiest varieties possible. This facilitates the subsequent care.
If you let the anemones bloom in the garden, you can collect seeds as soon as it is ripe. However, the maturity of the seeds is at the expense of flowering.
Mature seeds are easy to shake out. They should be kept in the refrigerator for some time to overcome germ inhibition by cold.
Sow anemones
The seed is sown in pots in the spring with potting soil and lightly covered with soil. Do not put the bowl too warm.
When the plantlets have accumulated, they are isolated and placed in small pots. Set the pots bright and sunny but not too warm. Pour gently to prevent waterlogging.
The anemones are not planted until the following spring. Overwinter in a bright, frost-free place, such as a basement window. Even winter hardy varieties will not survive cold temperatures until they are older.
Remove tuber anemones from seeds
Tuber anemones can also be sowed. However, it takes time for small tubers to form, which you can set. If you want to grow these anemones, you should rather use flower bulbs from the garden shop.
Anemones multiply - the different methods
Instead of pulling anemones from seeds, there are other methods of propagation:
Increasing anemones by these methods is less expensive and almost always succeeds.
Tips & Tricks
Autumn anemones form many small foothills that spread close to the ground. You can just let them grow so that the perennial spreads. Of course, you can also dig up the foothills and plant them elsewhere.
