The different varieties of watermelon

It is not only possible to distinguish between different melons such as watermelons and honeydew melons. Even the seemingly always same watermelons occur in many different ways.

The origin of watermelons

In its wild form, the watermelon actually comes from Africa and is botanically referred to as Citrullus lanatus. Today the plant is planted worldwide in warm regions and today it is found in more than 150 subspecies. The wild form of watermelon is usually referred to as Tsamma melon and also cultivated in parts of Central Africa. The most important growing areas for the agricultural cultivation of watermelons today are:

Due to the high transport weight and the relatively low sales price, the copies sold in Central Europe between May and September are usually from countries such as Spain, Hungary and Turkey.

The variety Sugar Baby

In the trade, only two of the few globally cultivated watermelon varieties are represented. One of them is the smaller Sugar Baby, whose fruits usually have a maximum weight of about three to five kilograms. They are approximately round colored and surrounded by a dark green colored shell. The flesh of the Sugar Baby is dark red when fully ripe and has an aromatic, sweet taste. The Sugar Baby is not least due to the smaller size very popular with consumers, as these melons can be consumed relatively quickly during fresh consumption and thus eliminates the problem of storage.

The watermelon variety Crimson Sweet

The second important watermelon variety on the world market is the so-called Crimson Sweet. According to its name, this also has a pleasantly sweet aroma, but produces much larger fruits than the Sugar Baby. Crimson Sweet fruits often weigh between 8 and 15 kilograms and get the rounded shape of a roller. The flesh is red to burgundy, while the shell has a pattern of dark green and light green stripes.

Tips & Tricks

Of the common types of watermelon, the Sugar Baby is the more common variety in this country, as their rather small fruits can more easily reach maturity before autumn.
