If a hedge is planted, a planting distance of about half a meter between each hornbeam is observed
The right planting distance for hornbeams
Hornbeams, in contrast to beeches, do not have such a pronounced root system. They form heart roots, which go above all in the depth. The planting distance does not have to be that big. Which planting distance is ideal depends on whether you plant the tree individually or as a hedge.
Planting distance as a single tree
How much space the hornbeam needs depends on whether you prune it or just let it grow. Natural shapes need more space to be effective. At least ten meters should be it.
Planting distance in the hedge
In the hedge, keep a planting distance of 50 centimeters. On a running meter you plant two hornbeams.
Tips
If you want to catch a hornbeam hedge very quickly, you can set it in autumn with a shorter planting distance. However, you will have to remove every second tree later.
