Tips for propagating immortality herb
Immortality herb (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) owes its name to the numerous ingredients that are especially valued in Asia. In Germany, too, the easy-care climbing plant is enjoying increasing popularity. The multiplication is simple and succeed also beginners.
Methods for propagating immortality herb
The vegetative propagation via sinkers, cuttings or rhizomes leads to identical branches, so that these methods are most frequently used.
The pulling of seeds is possible, but usually lacks suitable seed. Seeds harvested from own plants are seldom sorted.
Increase mortality herb over lowering
Loosen the soil carefully next to the plant. Choose a long tendril that you place on the prepared floor. Slightly scratch the tendril two to three times. Cover the shoot with soil and fix it with a tent peg, if necessary. The shoot tip is not covered.
At the scratches, small roots form after a few weeks and the plant sprouts new leaves. You can now separate the tendril and move the seedlings to another location.
Cutting cuttings
Cuttings cut best in the spring. They should be about 15 to 20 inches long. Remove the lower leaves and insert the shoots with the interface down into prepared pots with potting soil.
Excavate rhizomes
Larger specimens of the immortality plant develop rhizomes on the sides. These can be easily separated. Make sure that there are enough roots on the rhizome. Plant the offshoots in prepared pots or a sheltered place in the garden.
Increase immortality herb from seed
Buy only verified seeds and expect that even with the right treatment only a few seeds germinate.
The seeds should be placed in 20 degree warm water for several hours before sowing before being seeded in potting soil. Gently wet the substrate.
The seed pots are covered with foil and placed in a warm, bright place to germinate.
Tips
Immortality herb or Jiaogulan is a climber of the cucurbit family. The tendrils can be several meters long, so you have to pull the plant on a trellis.
