The home of the often bicoloured flowering hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) are the mountain forests of Southern Japan and Korea. There, the rather small flowering shrubs grow under tall trees and thus in shady locations. They also prefer one in their own garden.

The perfect location for this species of hydrangea is a light shade or partially shaded space under taller trees. However, the plate hydrangea is also tolerated by the sun to some extent, provided its high moisture requirement is met. In their home country, it rains a lot and often, which is why it is important to ensure adequate water intake. The soil is ideally loose, well-drained, slightly acidic and also very nutritious. Plate hydrangeas are among the heavyweights not only in terms of water, but also on nutrients.
