Make the right decision when selecting a variety
There is certainly something for every taste in the diversity of varieties offered in the trade. Basically, it's about whether you prefer

If you are not sure which onions you want to grow, try combining small amounts first. However, the different types of onion should not stand side by side in the garden because they do not tolerate each other well. There is nothing wrong with putting winter and summer onions in different places in the garden. In any case, the resistant varieties should be preferred, which survive even a cool and damp summer unscathed.
Prepare soil
Plan an onion-bed in your garden design on time. There, the soil should first be cleared of weeds and loosened well. A digging with organic fertilizer is recommended long before the planting. So the beds should be prepared already in the fall for the plugging in the spring, in any case immediately before putting the onion in the soil.
Care should be taken that the onion sets are not placed in the same place in the garden for the second consecutive time. Incidentally, the onions leave well-loosened soil so that they can be used at desired locations in the garden for soil improvement. Onions thrive best in a sunny and airy place.
Prepare the onion onions
As a rule, the purchased in the specialized retail stock is ready for use. However, if you have pulled the onion pickles yourself from seed in the previous year, we recommend a small "heat treatment" against the shot before setting. About four weeks before, the onions are kept at temperatures between 25 and 35 ° C.
Plug onions are put in autumn or spring
Winter onions are planted between August and October, summer onions from the end of March. Here only sufficient row spacing of 25-30 cm is to be considered. The distance between the onions should be 5-10 cm depending on the variety (note the instructions on the packaging!). The onions are not completely stuck in the ground, a tip should still peek out. The beds with the popped onions should be kept evenly moist and weed-free.
Tips & Tricks
Put a few onion wedges in the salad beds between each lettuce plant. This helps to keep the gluttonous snails away from the fresh salad vegetables. Because snails do not like onions.
