Skabiosis tolerates dryness better than wetness
The ideal care for the scabious
The scabious is a perennial waxy plant species, which is represented in Central Europe with about 20 subspecies. The attractive flowers often stand out in natural flower meadows, but are also perfect for growing in their own garden.
How often should scabies be cast?
Similar to the midday flowers, the various types of scabiosis tolerate certain dry periods better than a persistent waterlogging. However, the plants should be watered extensively, especially in case of severe dryness and heat, as well as directly after planting. Loamy soils do not like this plant species either, which is why heavy soils with sand, gravel and compost should be made more permeable.
When can the scabious be transplanted well?
The best times for the transplanting of the scabiosis are in the spring and late autumn after the last flowers. If, after a few years, the plants become lazy at the same location, a division should be made as with the yarrows.
When and how will scabioses be cut?
Perennial species of scabious do not necessarily need to be cut because they recreate the aboveground plant material each year anyway. However, it promotes the attachment of hibernation buds, when the plants are cut back in the fall to just above the ground. In addition, you should remove withered flower heads during flowering so that it comes to the formation of other flowers. In this way you also prevent a sometimes unwanted self-sowing of the scabious in the garden.
Are scabies susceptible to diseases and pests?
The various scabious species are not particularly susceptible to diseases and pests. Their development can be dangerous only the presence of waterlogging at the roots or too close together with the remaining vegetation in the garden.

If the scabioses are transplanted anyway, it is advisable to incorporate loose compost into the substrate at the site. In the spring, sprinkle about 20 to 30 grams of long-term storage fertilizer into the perennial flowerbed to provide abundance of flowers.
How are skabies overwintered?
Most perennial scabious species are relatively hardy. Only in exposed locations, in a pot culture or in seasons with so-called bald frosts should a cover reduce the risk of frost.
Tips
Since the scabiosis usually forms its flowers at the same time as the flowering period of the yarrow, high-contrast mixtures of both plants are particularly popular in peasant and nature gardens.
