Is the black bamboo hardy?
Both the black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra or Black Bamboo) and the black garden bamboo (bamboo fargesia nitida "Black Pearl") are hardy. In a mild winter with only light frost both species have no problem.
However, if temperatures fall below -20 ° C, the Black Garden Bamboo has more chances to survive, because it tolerates frosts down to - 25 ° C, the Black Bamboo depending on the variety only - 16 ° C or even - 20 ° C. Young bamboo is generally not as frost hardy in the early years as an older bamboo of the same variety. You need a winter protection.
How do I care for my black bamboo in winter?
No matter what kind of bamboo you have planted in your garden, it needs some care in winter to survive. It should also be watered regularly in the cold, but only on frost-free days. The more sun it gets in winter, the more moisture evaporates over its leaves and the more water the bamboo needs.
You can also protect a sensitive bamboo and your young plants against frost by adding a thick layer of leaves, straw or brushwood to the root ball. You can wrap the aboveground parts of your bamboo with an old sack or special fleece. At the same time, they reduce evaporation and protect the bamboo from freezing and dehydration.
If you put your bamboo in a planter, for example in a bucket, then it is best to overwinter it in a cool room or in a cold house. So even very sensitive varieties are suitable for cultivation in Germany. However, the bamboo is not as big there as in the field.
