Black bamboo of the species Phyllostachys nigra grows very fast. The individual stalks come with their final diameter from the ground and have reached their maximum height after a few weeks. After a few years, they die.
The new stems each year are about one meter longer than the previous year, until the bamboo has reached its maximum size. However, this depends very much on the prevailing climate. Hardly a bamboo is as big in Germany as in its original home.
