All parts of the plant contain toxins, the onion stands out with the alkaloid Amaryllidaceae. The onion is therefore the most toxic. The leaves, stems and flowers contain the toxic substances tazettin, galanthamine and lycorin.
No big danger for humans
Snowdrops are considered low toxicity and poisoning people with snowdrops is relatively unlikely. This plant is not like any other plant that is considered edible. The exception is small children. Explain to your children that they are not allowed to eat the snowdrop!
Snowdrop poisonous for dogs
In addition to infants, especially (young) pets such as dogs are at risk. If a dog has nibbled on the snowdrop or eaten too much of it, the following symptoms may occur:
People react similarly to a snowdrop poisoning. Experts say eating up to three onions in an adult is not noticeable. If pets have poisoned, a veterinarian should be consulted immediately.
As countermeasures help to drink a lot of water and take activated carbon. A lethal dose is unknown. Prevention is better than countermeasures: Do not plant snowdrops if you have children or / and pet owners.
