Cultivate oleander in the garden - better in the tub
In Italy and Spain, the occasionally very large shrubs with the tireless blossoms are everywhere: even further north, for example in Ticino, many gardeners enjoy the magnificent shrubs in the garden. But even if you have discovered beautiful oleander in the gardens in Bologna or Lake Lugano: In Germany, planting is not a good idea due to the very low frost hardness.
Oleander tolerates little frost
Oleander is winter hardy only to about minus five degrees Celsius and even tolerates these low frosts only for a very short time. Deeper or even permanent degrees of freezing, as is common in many regions of Germany, are usually fatal to the Mediterranean shrub. The plant does not die immediately when its aboveground shoots freeze: In this case, just cut the frozen bush to just above the ground and it will expel again. Deadly, however, is ground frost, in which the roots are affected and die off. Once the oleander roots have been frozen, the plant is beyond saving.
Planted oleander is more robust - but only with plant pot!
For this reason, planted oleanders - whose root system is located in the protective soil - are much more robust than bucket oleanders whose roots freeze faster through the planter. In mild winters, you can therefore also overwinter the shrub by burying it (as early as possible in spring) at a pase place in the garden. However, the plant pot must not be removed in order to quickly dig up the oleander in the event of threatening frosts and to be able to confiscate it in a safe winter quarters.
Oleander wintering properly
Oleanders overwinter best in a frost-free, but cool and bright room at temperatures of about five degrees Celsius. For example, unheated greenhouses or conservatories, staircases, attics or cellars are ideal. Even if the site is dark, you can put the shrub there, but then the temperature should not rise above two degrees Celsius. Do not forget to water the oleander about once a week, but you should stop fertilizing in late summer.
Tips
As long as the temperatures are still mild, you can also overwinter your oleander outside. In this case, it is best to pack it carefully with bubble wrap and / or garden towels and ensure that it is as protected as possible from wind and rain.
