Determine columnar cactus - characteristics of columnar cacti
The cereus, also called Cereus, is very well maintained in the room due to its distinctive appearance. Since it is available in many species, it is not always easy to pinpoint the variety. However, there are some features that allow you to determine a columnar cactus quite well.
Features for determining the column cactus
The columnar cactus is native to South America. He needs only a little water, because he can store the moisture in the trunk.
In his native country, a columnar cactus can grow more than 15 meters, depending on the species. With good care, he can reach a height of one meter and more within about six years in a room culture.
Upright form with one or more trunks
The cereus cactus always grows in an upright position. Some varieties have a main stem without side shoots, while others form several stems.
The individual trunks are ribbed, the number varies depending on the variety. There are species that only have seven to eight ribs, while others show up to 30 ribs.
Difference to the leaf cactus
Leaf cacti are among the succulents. They are at home in the rainforests and almost always grow on the leaves of other plants in nature. Their shoots consist of several limbs that hang down. Thus, the leaf cactus is well suited as a traffic light plant. Thorns are almost never present, while the cactus always carries thorns. These can sometimes be very strong.
Leaf cacti, which include Christmas cactus and Easter cactus, regularly bloom in contrast to the cereus cactus when kept cooler in winter. Some varieties also need several hours of complete darkness per day.
The cereus cactus almost never blooms in room culture. The gardener has more luck if he can pull the Cereus in the greenhouse all year round. However, the flower is only open at night. During the day it fades quickly.
Tips
When repotting a cereus, be careful. The roots are very sensitive and should not be damaged. Sick and injured roots increase the risk of disease.
