Height of the Larkspur depends on the species
Knight spurs are a group of plants of the family Hahnenfußgewächse, which are to be found for many centuries in native gardens because of their pretty, in very different blue or violet blooming flowers. Worldwide, about 5000 different varieties are known whose stature heights differ greatly from each other.
Larkspur usually between 120 and 150 centimeters high
The wild relatives of the cultivated larkspur - the field and field lark spurs - were still very common until a few decades ago, but were greatly suppressed by intensive agricultural use (and, associated therewith, the use of pesticides). These original forms of garden knight spur are only about 70 to 100 centimeters high, whereas most cultivated forms reach stately 120 to 150 centimeters and often become almost as wide.
Dwarf varieties of the Delphinium
An exception is the popular, strongly blue larkspur "blue dwarf" of the kind Delphinium grandiflorum. This is only about 30 centimeters high, but it forms very dense clumps and also impresses with its particularly large flowers. This species is perfect for stone and terraced gardens and should preferably be planted in groups. Unfortunately, this perennial plant, in contrast to the mostly perennial high lark spurs, quite short-lived, but is velvety for itself.
Delphinium elatum, the highest variety
Knight spurs of the species Delphinium elatum (German: "High Larkspur") reach a height of up to two meters and more. The associated varieties are perennial and can often be up to five years old. The High Larkspur is found in its wild forms mainly in the Alps and other mid and high mountains at altitudes of up to 2019 meters. However, its cultivars also thrive - corresponding conditions such as calcareous and siliceous soil - in the lowlands.
Enchanting Elatum varieties
Tips & Tricks
Although all larkspur are considered poisonous, but especially the Elatum varieties contain very large amounts of toxic alkaloids and are therefore highly toxic.
