Choose the right variety for the trellis

While wild blackberry roots can grow through a clearing or embankment ra quickly and are then hard to remove, bred blackberry varieties usually grow more moderately in a fixed location. However, there are also differences in the growth of the crops for the garden. Some varieties grow rather upright and compact and require no significant care except for a regular pruning of the harvested tendrils. Select the ideal location

Blackberries should be planted in a half-shady to full-sun setting in the garden, which has a deep and rich soil. If you give the blackberry plants a protected and warm place to grow, they will thank you with a slightly earlier maturity of the sweet fruits. A trellis is therefore of the utmost benefit if it provides the brambles a clear place to grow about a meter away from a house wall heated by the sun. If the wall of the house itself is to become a climbing frame for blackberries with a wooden frame and some tensioning wires, you should use the blackberry plants at least 40 centimeters away from the wall, so that the roots of the blackberry are not too much constricted.

Build the trellis out of wood and wires yourself

Since a blackberry palate needs to be reared up and maintained every year due to the two-year-old woody plants anyway, this should be built up from the following materials:

Tips & Tricks

If blackberries grow in sheltered position under a protruding balcony, the tendrils can also be easily shaped with wires or cords pulled upwards.
