Corn salad is a type of vegetable that generally beginners can not go wrong with. However, when choosing seed, there are a few factors to consider when you want to have the most productive crop of beautifully grown lettuce plants possible.

A salad for almost the whole year

While other types of lettuce such as lettuce or iceberg lettuce in this country can only be grown seasonally, there are the lettuce and frost hardy varieties. These can survive the winter under a blanket of snow as young plants, to be ready for harvest in March or April. However, when choosing seed, you should be aware of which varieties of lamb's lettuce are suitable for autumn and winter sowing. Hardy varieties of lamb's lettuce are for example:

Sparingly sown and richly harvested

As is the case with many vegetables, lamb's lettuce must not be sown too densely. You can usually harvest a much more beautiful grown corn salad, if the plants have at least a distance of about five to 10 centimeters to each other. Thus, the individual plantlets not only get enough sunlight, but also sufficient nutrients from the soil for a healthy growth.

The direct sowing of corn salad and the pikieren

Since many varieties of lamb's lettuce are even hardy and are thus suitable for late autumn sowing, this vegetable variety does not necessarily result in a need for preculture on the windowsill. Nevertheless, you can sow corn salad in pots when needed, and then poke it later in the field or in a balcony box. When separating the plants, be careful not to injure the sensitive roots and not plant the plants in the bed.

Corn salad in permanent culture

Since corn salad expels when the base in the soil remains, a plant can be harvested several times in succession. Corn salad does not consume the soil excessively, which is why it can be grown in the same location for several crop periods. Leave corn salad from spring sowing into autumn and it will sow itself under good conditions for the next growing season.
