The right planting time

Depending on the climatic conditions, you can plant the palm between the end of March and June. Thus, the attractive plant can use almost the entire garden season to get used to the changed site conditions.

Location

Palm trees prefer a sunny spot and sheltered from rain, wind and snow. Ideal is a location near heated buildings, as it is a bit warmer in winter. Choose a spot where the palm will be pampered by the sun for a few hours during the cold season.

The substrate

Palm trees prefer loose surfaces that are neither too sandy nor too clay-rich. Mix plenty of humus, compost soil or special palm soil under the excavation of the planting hole. For some species it is recommended to add extra gravel to keep the soil permanently loose.

Planting

First, lift a plant pit that is twice as big as the root ball. Loosen up the ground deeply and apply a drainage layer of expanded clay or gravel. These plants are quite sensitive to moisture and are usually used slightly elevated. Only with very sandy garden soil, you can do without this measure and plant the palm at root level.

Attach palms

Especially in the first year, palm trees are not very stable. Therefore, push rods into the ground to the right and left of the trunk and secure the plant with coconut knits. It is then watered vigorously.

Prefer and multiply

It's quite tedious to bring in palm trees themselves. There are palm species whose seeds need two years to germinate. However, some species make offshoots and side shoots, which you can carefully cut off in spring with a sharp knife and planted in a pot.

It may take a few years for palm trees to flower in the open air. For example, the common hemp palm needs about ten years to flower first. So do not lose patience.

Tips

Since most palms are grown under glass in our latitudes, it is important to accustom the plant to the unfamiliar conditions before inserting it into the garden. A sheltered place on the balcony or the terrace without direct midday sun is ideal.
