The sowing of catnip - step by step
Buying an early catnip and planting it in the garden is no trick. If you are looking for a small challenge and you love to watch little seed turn into pretty perennials, you should pull the catnip out of seeds.
Choose suitable seed
If you already have a catnip and want to multiply it, you can use their seeds. But beware: Not all catmint species are very fertile and form seeds.
Well suited and popular varieties are among others the citrus-like minty scented catnip, Odeur Citron 'or the white flowering variety' Snowflake '. The cultivar 'Suberba' is a nice contrast to 'Snowflake' and is considered widespread.
Depending on which variety you choose, later on the choice of location depends on it. Grape-dusty varieties like it warm and dry. Green-leaved varieties grow best in a partially shaded and moist location.
Sowing - from beginning to end
The best time to seed the catnip seeds is between March and April. By June, the seeds should be encouraged to germinate. Otherwise, the likelihood that the catnip will blossom in the same year is getting smaller.
How to proceed:
Depending on the temperature, it takes between one and four weeks for the seeds to germinate. The ideal substrate for growing is sandy-loamy, slightly acidic and low in nutrients. If the plants are 5 cm tall, they are planted in a suitable location. In the field, they should only come to the Eisheiligen in May.
Attention: likes to sow on your own
Since the catnip likes to sow itself, you do not have to take the sowing into your own hands. If you want to prevent self-sowing, cut off the withered inflorescences after the main flower in summer.
Tips & Tricks
If you put the seeds in the ground and cover them with a thin layer of earth, you should press them well before flooding them with water. Otherwise, there is a risk that the tiny seeds will swim away from their designated place.
