Planting Palettes: A Guide

Pallets can be used to create beautiful vertical gardens. However, it requires some preparation before you can plant your pallets. Find out how to proceed step by step here.

Where do I get pallets from?

Getting used pallets is not that easy. Buying them online is usually out of the question because transportation costs are quite high. Therefore, only to become mobile. If there is a business park in your town, drive there and look around. Look at pallet piles, just ask if you could not get one or two. It does not necessarily have to be Euro pallets. So-called one-way pallets or pallets with different dimensions can also be wonderfully planted.
Of course, you can also buy new pallets at the hardware store. An unpolished Euro pallet costs here under 20 €.

The principle of the planted pallet

Pallets are mostly used for vertical planting, although in principle horizontal planting is also possible. For vertical planting, the pallet is set up vertically with the long side down, and then the three subdivisions are closed at the bottom by screwing a board underneath. This creates three flower boxes. These are then laid out with weed fleece, pond liner or similar, so that the earth can not fall out.

What tools and material do I need to prepare the pallets?

The pallets are ground off before planting, glazed and converted into flower boxes. You will need:

Plant a palette: The instructions

1. Sand the pallet

To avoid splintering when planting and maintaining your pallet garden, you should sand down unpolished pallets. The smooth wood also provides less attack surface for moisture, dirt and pathogens. Above all, the rear side of the pallet is visually important because it points later to the front.

2. Close bottom

To close the flower boxes, you have two options: You can buy in the hardware store boards in the required size or you have a second Euro pallet to hand and remove the three long boards on the back of the range and use them.
Screw the three boards to the bottom of each of the three partitions, creating three boxes.

3. Painting

Now take an environmentally friendly, weather-resistant glaze or varnish at hand and use it to paint your europallet or pallet to protect you from weather and moisture. You can choose a transparent lacquer or you can color your palette. You can also paint each subdivision in different colors.
Then wait for the paint to dry completely.

4. Lay out with fleece or foil

If you populate the pallets with flowerpots, you can avoid lining with foil

Now the three boxes are laid out with foil or weed fleece. This is festgetacktert at the top. If the weed fleece is permeable to water, you do not need to provide additional drainage. However, if you have opted for pond liner or other impermeable plastic, you should then prick several holes in the ground so that excess water can drain away.
You can save yourself this step if you only want to put pots in your pallet.

5. Stabilize

So that your Europallet does not fall over, you should provide it with feet or anchor it at an angle. Of course, this step is not necessary if you want to hang the pallet on the wall. However, if you want to set up the pallet vertically, cut two boards of equal length and screw them right and left under the pallet so that it can not fall over. Another option is to skew the palette slightly, e.g. against a wall and with stones or the like prevent slipping.
Now move your pallet to its final location so you do not have to move it.

6. Fill the pallet with soil

As the lowest layer, place one to two centimeters of gravel in the flower boxes. This serves as a drainage layer. Then fill the subdivisions up to two thirds with soil.

7. Plant Europallet

Now place your selected plants in the palette and fill in the remaining gaps with soil just below the edge. Water your palette garden.
