Orange tree - Care in the apartment possible?
Cultivating an orange tree in the normal room all year round often fails, mostly due to faulty care and / or too little sunlight. Like all citrus plants, an orange tree is not necessarily suitable for the houseplant, as it should be on the balcony or in the garden at least in the summer months and must spend the winter in a cool winter.
Year-round room culture
From a year-round clean room culture is not recommended, as this will sooner or later harm your orange tree. A self-grown young plant should, at least in the first years, in the sunniest place on the south window and slowly get used to the summer fresh air culture. Pure room keeping is problematic for three reasons:
1. Light intensity is not sufficient indoors
Even if it seems very light to us humans, an orange feels in the light conditions in many living rooms as in the deepest winter. The sunlight is strongly filtered by the modern multiple glazing and is therefore simply not sufficient in intensity. Outside, however, the orange tree - of course, if you get used to it - can stand for hours in the blazing sun and so can fill up a lot of light and heat.
2. Winter quarters is too warm
For light reasons, oranges need a cool winter break in a cool but frost-free and bright room. Oranges, which are kept as a houseplant, throw off the leaves at the end of winter for lack of strength. In addition, the weakened plants are often haunted by pests, especially spider mites.
What you should look for in a pure room culture
If you still want to keep an orange tree in room culture all year round, you should take the following things to heart:
