Plant water hyacinths properly or put them better
With the spring flower hyacinth (Hyacinthus), water hyacinths (Eichhornia) have little in common. Only the blue flowers, which produce the water plants under good conditions, are similar to those of the hyacinth.
Which location does the water hyacinth prefer?
Water hyacinths need plenty of space and special conditions to thrive. They can be kept in ponds and larger pools.
How should the water quality be?
The water hyacinth grows only in very nutrient-rich water. A pH of 6 to 8 is ideal.
Many pond owners complain that their pond is too nutrient-rich. For such cases, water hyacinths are an ideal pond stock, as they need so many nutrients.
When will the water hyacinth be set?
The non hardy water hyacinth is allowed to grow outside from May, when really no frostbites are to be expected.
The plants can be placed in the aquarium at any time.
How is the water hyacinth "planted", so set?
The little rosettes swim on the water. The leaves are filled with air, which drives the plant up. The roots can grow up to 40 centimeters long. With them anchor the water hyacinths.
Water hyacinths are simply placed on the water. In moving water, it may be useful to fix the plant with a thread, so that it does not float to another point until the root sprouts.
What distance do water hyacinths need when setting?
Do not put water hyacinths too close. A maximum of three plants should be planted per two square meters of water.
When does the aquatic plant blossom?
The flowering period lasts from July to October. In the pond, the water hyacinth rarely blooms, because the water is not warm enough and the humidity is too low.
How is the water hyacinth multiplied?
Water hyacinths propagate vegetatively over streamers. The daughter rosettes are as large as the mother plant within a few days. They can be easily separated to gain new plants.
Tips & Tricks
Water hyacinths are native to South America. There, they spread so rapidly that they not only hinder navigation, but can also silt entire ponds. When maintaining the water hyacinth, therefore, regular bleaching is very important.
