Which roses are poisonous, which harmless?
Since antiquity (and probably even longer), the rose is not only the symbol of botanical beauty, but also a coveted medicinal and culinary plant. It is estimated that between 100 and 250 (depending on the method of counting) different species and countless varieties are available - and new varieties are added every day. Of course, many a rose lover is intrigued by the question: Are all roses edible, or are there any that are poisonous?
Only real roses are suitable for consumption
First of all, there are many beautiful flowers that bear the name "Rose". However, these are not really real roses in all cases! To the real and thus edible roses belong only the wild and cultivated roses of the genus Rosa; all others are usually called that, even though they are not roses in the true sense. Peonies (Paeonia), peas or hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) or Christmas or snow roses (Helleborus niger) may have rose-like flowers, but belong to completely different plant genera and are usually even poisonous.
Tips
Purchased pot roses or rose bouquets are also not suitable for consumption, as these plants have been treated massively with toxic pesticides.
