Olives need sun - in every season
Olive trees - or olive trees - have been at home in the Mediterranean region for thousands of years and are perfectly adapted to the prevailing climate there. The gnarled, very impressive trees need a dry and sunny climate, which should neither be permanently hot nor frosty.
Olive trees love constant weather
It is no coincidence that, despite numerous attempts to the contrary, olives do not thrive in tropical and subtropical areas. First, it is too hot for them and secondly too humid. Moisture and high air humidity tolerate the undemanding plants only badly. Even larger plantations north of the Mediterranean could hold so far only a few years. Olive groves in Germany, for example, are frozen during severe winter periods. Olives are not susceptible to frost per se, their resistance to cold depends on the variety. Some varieties of olive tolerate cold better than others, but all must be protected from drastic cold spells and constant temperature fluctuations. Olives love constant weather without too much day and night differences.
The more sun the better
The sunnier the location of the olive tree, the better it will develop. In general, however, olive trees also accept partially shaded locations. However, you should make sure that the tree is as free as possible and the roots are not overgrown, for example by creeping or other plants.
Tips & Tricks
Make sure that even in the apartment or in the greenhouse kept olive trees that they get the most sunny possible place. Lack of light acknowledges the olive with increased leaf shedding.
