The best known species of leaf cactus are the Christmas cactus and the Easter cactus. But there are a number of other species that even belong to different genera.
In nature, leaf cactus species live almost exclusively on the leaves of other plants. They are therefore called epiphytic. In the house, the non-hardy cacti are usually grown as hybrids, as they are more resistant.
The types of leaf cactuses differ in the color and size of the flowers. Except blue all flower colors are represented. Depending on the species, the flowers can grow up to 20 centimeters. Some species exude a strong scent. Spines do not bear leaf cacti species or only very weak ones.
Leaf cactus species do not tolerate drought well
Unlike other cactus species, the leaf cactus does not cope with complete dryness. He has to be watered regularly during the summer. However, waterlogging should not occur.
Cactus soil is not suitable as a substrate because it contains too few nutrients. Therefore, plant a leaf cactus in special leaf cactus soil or compose it yourself from soil and sand.
Some species need several hours of darkness
If a young leaf cactus does not flower, it's normal. Most species do not flower until they are several years old. They do not produce flowers before they reach the age of five.
Some varieties of the Blattkaktusses need after the flowering time daily several hours of complete darkness, because otherwise they do not bloom. This includes the variety Schlumbergera.
In winter, leaf cacti need to be kept cooler so that they can flower. If they are too warm all year round, the flower will stay out. Even during the hibernation you have to cast leaf cacti, but the casting quantities are noticeably reduced, so that the substrate is only just barely moist.
Tips
All leaf cactus species can be easily propagated from cuttings or seeds. Cuttings can be cut in spring or summer.
