Refining fruit trees - when is the right time?
Fruit trees are usually propagated by refinement, as this method allows the fastest fruit-bearing woody plants. In addition, certain characteristics, such as vigor, are best transferred to a specific variety. The different finishing methods are carried out at different seasons.
Time depends on chosen method
For example, oculating, a method of refinement that is very common in many types of fruit, takes place in the summer. There are two different times at which you can successfully plant the desired fruit variety: The highest growth rates are between May and June and then again between July and August, whereby the later date is better - early-cultured plants are still active in the same year but then freeze back. The so-called Reisingeredlung, in which underlay and Edelreiser are interconnected by copulation, is, however, only possible during the dormancy.
Tips
Seed-propagated fruit trees are often wild-type, which may have very different properties than their parent plants. Seedlings, in particular of plum-like ones, often have thorns.
