Freeze horseradish - the best methods
Horseradish gives spreads and various dishes an intense spicy touch. If you are one of the people who appreciate the very own taste of the root, and still have a larger portion left, it is worth freezing the horseradish. Our instructions tell you step by step how to proceed.
So you can freeze horseradish
In essence, there are three options for freezing horseradish:
Variant 1: Freeze horseradish as complete root
- Leave the horseradish as it is (ie raw and in one piece). Wash the root thoroughly. Dry the horseradish thoroughly. To do this, simply place it on a piece of kitchen paper and dab it gently dry. Place the horseradish root in a freezer box, such as a freezer bag or a lockable box suitable for the freezer. Choose a freezer bag, it is essential that you pull the air out of this. A vacuum sealer will help you with this. Alternatively, you can use your mouth as a tool. Close the container airtight. Label the freezer container with the date to keep the storage time in mind. Put the protected horseradish in the freezer.
Tips:
Variant 2: Freeze horseradish cut into pieces
If you are dealing with a particularly large horseradish root, it makes sense to cut them into pieces and freeze them. But in order:
- Wash the horseradish and dry thoroughly (for details, take a look at the steps and tips in the Variant 1 instructions). Cut the root into pieces with a sharp knife. How you design these pieces (size, shape) is up to you. Portion the horseradish pieces and place in freezer containers (bags or boxes). Do not forget to pull the air out of the bags. Make a note of the date on the containers and finally put them in the freezer.
Tips
Portioning makes double sense: on the one hand the pieces stay fresher and on the other hand you can distribute the horseradish in such a way that you only have to bring out one box or one bag from the freezer per dish.
Variation 3: Freeze horseradish in a shredded form
The third variant works the same as Method 2 - with the only difference that you do not cut the horseradish, but grate small. Again, it is advisable to freeze the resulting grater portions in pase dosages.
Tips:
General Note: For all freeze variants, the horseradish will last a good six months in the freezer. Keep in mind, however, that the taste usually diminishes a bit.
