Cutting magnolia: When is the optimal time?
Some magnolias reach quite considerable heights with age: Depending on the variety, the tree can grow to eight meters or even higher, whereby in most cases it tends to be as tall as in width. No wonder, then, that the magnolia should be trimmed from time to time.
Cut magnolia after flowering
The best time to prune a magnolia is the spring or early summer after the flowering bloom has finished. For then the tree has enough time to process this intervention and to recover over the warm vegetation period. Bear in mind, however, that fruit that has blossomed out in the fall will develop into interestingly shaped fruits. On the other hand, a cut in the fall should be avoided, unless there is a storm damage or it is necessary to remove dead or sick wood.
Tips & Tricks
In general, however, a magnolia should be cut as little as possible and ideally not at all. The tree reacts very sensitively to such interventions, in addition, often very ugly-looking water shoots grow out of the interfaces.
