Dry chilli seeds - instructions and practical tips
If you have very nice chili peppers and want to multiply them over time, it makes sense to keep their seeds for the next year. To preserve fresh chilli seeds, you need to dry them. We'll show you how to do it best!
How to Dry Chilli Seeds in the Air - Step by Step Instructions
- Put on disposable gloves. Take a (ripe) chili and a knife at hand. Cut the chili lengthwise. Scrape the seeds out with one finger. Sprinkle the seeds on erase or typewriter paper. Distribute the seeds evenly. Bring to a dry, dark and airy place. If possible, change the paper daily and turn the grains every now and then.
Tips
It takes a few days for the chili seeds to dry completely.
Important information for air drying
For the air drying to succeed, you should consider the following points:
If you follow these measures, you can look forward to a high germination rate. For gently air-dried chilli seeds germination is at least two years.
Caution: If the seeds remain moist, they will begin to decompose and may even become moldy. After drying, only about eight percent moisture should be contained in the seeds.
Tips
As long as the seeds bend, they are not sufficiently dry. Seeds that discolored should be sorted out.
Dry chilli seeds in the dehydrator or oven?
Theoretically, you can also dry chili seeds in the dehydrator or oven. But: Especially in the oven, it happens quickly that you destroy the protein of the seed, which makes them incapable of germination. In any case, make sure that the temperature does not exceed 35 degrees.
Tips
A Dehydrator will serve you well, but you should leave the oven outside.
Keep dried chilli seeds properly
It is best to keep dried chili seeds in airtight bags and add some rice grains. This will keep the moisture in the packaging low.
Tips
Label the bags with the current date to keep track of the remaining germination time.
Finally, simply put the bags in a drawer.
