How to gently transplant the laurel
Spicy laurel or laurel is generally not very susceptible to diseases and pests. For symptoms such as yellow or brown leaves, transplanting to another location may be useful.
The most important requirements for a laurel location
Since the genuine laurel (Laurus nobilis) originates from the Near East and has spread since ancient times around the Mediterranean, it should be planted in this country as sunny and warm as possible. While it can sometimes be wintered outdoors in particularly mild locations such as on islands or in the Rhine valleys, it is usually cultivated in pots or on the balcony in areas with strong winter frosts and overwintered in a not too warm winter quarters. Basically, the laurel should never dry out for long periods, but it also does not tolerate waterlogging. The substrate should therefore be loose and humus, have a certain amount of sand and good drainage.
The right time for transplanting
If you want to give more space to a laurel in the pot, you can transplant it well in early spring at frost-free temperatures in a larger vessel. Also outdoor plants are ideally transplanted in the spring before the plant starts with young shoots in a new growing season. As is common with most plants, you should also transplant the laurel at moderate temperatures and avoid hot sunny days for this work. After transplanting, you must water the plants well, so that cavities around the roots of the hair with soil substrate are closed.
Care measures when transplanting laurel
When repotting and laurel bushes in the field, it can be equally beneficial to shorten the roots during transplanting with a clean cutting shear, in order to stimulate the growth of new roots. A pruning usually facilitates the laurel bushes growing at the new location. Since the laurel branches are better suited for propagation by cuttings in the autumn than in spring, you should plan accordingly, if a repotting is planned for next spring.
Tips & Tricks
When mixing fertilizer into the plant substrate, you should be very careful when repotting laurel, as it is sensitive to salt compounds in inorganic fertilizers.
