The laurel gets brown leaves - what to do?
In the care of laurel in between the real laurel and the often used for the planting of laurel hedges cherry laurel to distinguish. Both may tend to brown the leaves for a variety of reasons.
Preserve laurel from great drought
The real laurel and cherry laurel are both relatively sensitive to extended dry periods. Be especially careful about:
Basically, real laurel needs a lot of heat, as it occurs in nature rather in Mediterranean locations. However, it should be sufficiently watered to avoid dry damage such as brown leaves. Cherry laurel needs a loose and well-rooted soil without waterlogging, but should be regularly poured extensively in sunny locations during summer dry periods.
Beware of overwintering
Only the real laurel is sensitive to frost in this country, which is why it should be wintered in a suitable winter quarters. If true laurel or cherry laurel get brown leaves after winter and discard them, the plants do not necessarily have to be completely dead. It may also be a dry damage for lack of liquid water in the soil. Cut the affected shrubs back to the main branches, sometimes showing a renewed release of young leaves.
Tips & Tricks
If possible, do not cut the real laurel and the cherry laurel with electric hedge trimmers, otherwise halved leaves will die off and remain as ugly brown spots on the plants. Rather, make targeted cuts with a manual pruning shears.
