Sunflowers should be watered daily if it has not rained. On hot summer days, the plants need more water.
When does the sunflower need fertilizer?
Sunflowers need a lot of nutrients because of their long roots and stature height. Fertilize the plants at least once a week with a nitrogenous fertilizer. It is even better to provide them with new nutrients twice a week.
Suitable fertilizers are nettles, horn shavings, mature compost or cattle manure.
You should refrain from using artificial manure if you would like to eat the kernels yourself or harvest them for pets and birds.
Need sunflowers support posts?
Especially in drafty places, the setting of support posts is recommended. Too easily break the huge stems with the heavy heads by a strong gust of wind.
Use sturdy metal supports or tie the sunflower to several long bamboo sticks.
Can sunflowers be transplanted?
Transplanting is not recommended. Larger plants have very spreading roots, which can only be partially pulled out of the ground when digging.

Do you have to cut sunflowers?
