The so-called saffron root is known as a cooking ingredient especially as part of the curry powder, since the powder obtained from the rhizomes has a strong yellowing effect. Since the turmeric plant comes from tropical latitudes with regular rainfall, they like it quite evenly moist. The soil around the rhizomes should never completely dry out, but the plant does not like waterlogging. Therefore, care should be taken when growing in the pot on a suitable drainage below the plant substrate. When growing in the field should be poured sparingly especially during the summer flowering period.
When and how is the turmeric plant repotted?
When repotting, it depends on how the plants are cultivated:
As it is a non-frost resistant plant species, tubers from the open field must be dug out in the early autumn and wintered in the house dark. Plants placed in the house with the pot are usually replanted or split into a slightly larger pot before being released in spring.
Does the saffron root have to be cut back?
Since the above-ground parts of plants die off after flowering and only the rhizome survives as a means of survival, the withered leaves and flowers are simply cut off. The removal of withered flowers during flowering can promote the formation of other flowers in the same season.
Which diseases and pests are causing the plant?
If the turmeric in the house is too warm and dry, occasionally an infection with spider mites occurs. These can be recognized on the white webs and combated with a sharp jet of water or appropriate means from the specialist trade. Other deficiency symptoms are almost exclusively due to care mistakes.
How and when should turmeric be fertilized?
During the growth phase from spring to summer, commercially available liquid fertilizers or fertilizer sticks can be used sparingly. By September at the latest, the fertilizer is set. For the question of fertilization is also relevant whether the rhizomes are intended for consumption or not.
How are the plants successfully wintered?
The plants or their tubers should definitely be brought into the house, when the temperatures fall below about 10 degrees Celsius outdoors. You can either dig up the rhizomes and clean them with a cloth, put them in sand, or overwinter them in a pot with a relatively dry substrate. This should be done in a dark room and at about 15 degrees Celsius.
Tips
When watering your turmeric plants you should be careful not to wet the flowers with water too often. If permanent water remains in the notches of the old inflorescences, it can come in the worst case to flower rot.
